Mini Artomat Spacescapes 933-950 by crazycolleeny Mini Artomat Spacescapes 933-950 by crazycolleeny
Annnd the second part of the set for Artomat (blocks 933-950) is for their participation in a film festival... so of course I had to do some sci-fi movie blocks :D Do you recognize the movies I'm referencing? :D :D :D

The one on the top right looks like it came from the movie Wall-E. I love that movie and you painted it very well :)

Yep, Wall-E!  Thank you very much!  These tiny ones are crazy hard to get right, so that means a lot to me :)

Yeah. These paintings, though they are small and simple, are really hard to create. Just imagine doing portraits on the canvases that small and it would take forever :)

Yeah, I had a hard time painting portraits too. I just finished four tiny ones last week if you wanna check them out:  2 + 2 = 4 by DragonBin
Still, I really admire your landscape and animal paintings. You are very talented.

How do you paint the galaxies? I want to paint them someday and I just can't get the colours right.

These timelapses might help (most are on a larger scale):
www.youtube.com/playlist?list=…

Or, specifically:
youtu.be/YtTwb6TwUSk (art-o-mat spacescapes)
youtu.be/y9JF4V78WOw (more mini-spacescapes)
youtu.be/ZXRwoLWcVSM (a - larger - galaxy painting)

Typically, particularly for these small ones, I use an oil medium mixed with oil paint... or I put a thin layer of oil medium on first, then add color... or sometimes, just a thin color of paint if it's transparent and "flows" enough (really depends on the brand).  I then go back in with white or another opaque color to lighten areas and "build up" brightness and light.  I tend to not be too picky about exact color with the little ones, though, because I also use them as color tests to see what colors I get with different paints or different mixes ;)

In the "larger" galaxy painting (last link), I did things slightly differently, because I wanted to use a more transparent yellow but not dull it too much with white (still wanted the vibrancy of the yellow in some areas), so some of the gessoed underpainting (what I start out with) was painted white so the yellow would still stand out.  But otherwise it was how I tend to paint space: I started with a thin layer of medium on the canvas, then added color, then lightened certain areas more and more with lighter and lighter shades of each color (and darkened some areas as well).  It almost feels like sculpting sometimes.

In terms of color... The colors themselves don't tend to matter too much (at least for me) as long as you don't dull them too much - meaning paying attention to color theory/ mixing.  If you want a darker shade but still want it to look vibrant, mix with an appropriate color, instead of just mixing with black (unless you want certain areas to look more dull - there are still places that I use black, it's not a hard-and-fast rule).  Mixing a lot of colors or too many pigments can get you mud.  I fell into the trap once of mixing two opaque primary colors from a beginner's set and getting a horrible muddy gross color only to find out later that really those two colors would never have gotten the vibrant secondary I wanted because of the actual pigments in the paint.  :(  I still have trouble with reds (partly because I like using white to make things brighter, but red + white = pink... ;) ); I'm not the best with color theory either (and I'm sure my terminology is all wrong haha) but working on it.

Well, sorry for rambling on there (or if I sound patronizing, I don't mean to be, I'm just rambling thoughts)!  I might have gone overboard trying to answer what I thought you might want to know but don't know enough of your background, so... I go a little crazy sometimes  ;)  But if you have a more specific question I can do my best to answer it :D

Hooray Stargate!  Yep, Star Trek (I didn't specify which Star Trek movie, but I'm fond of the early ones), and the cute robot is Wall-E.  The other three are Alien (the egg), 2001 a Space Odyssey (with the ship computer "Hal 9000" saying "I'm sorry Dave..."), and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Spaceship over Devil's Tower) :D  I thought about doing something with "I, Robot" but didn't this time.  They seemed to have gone over well with the Art-o-Mat people, though, so I may make more like these :D
